NHL 18: Take A look At Bo Horvat’s Rating

Despite leading the Vancouver Canucks in scoring last year, centre Bo Horvat didn’t make a high rating in NHL 18 — coming in at an 84. Was that too high, too low or just perfect? Vancouver Canucks centre Bo Horvat has come as advertised thus far after being selected ninth overall at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft. Horvat led the team in scoring last season with 20 goals and 52 points.

The pressure was on Horvat to triumph after the Canucks traded off franchise goalie Cory Schneider into the New Jersey Devils for the ninth pick. Horvat has seen his scoring totals go up each year, and the 22-year-old is just entering his prime. Until/unless 2017 fifth overall pick Elias Pettersson reaches his full potential from the NHL, Horvat are the Canucks No. 1 centre.

He, Brock Boeser and Sven Baertschi revealed plenty of flashes collectively on the top line near the end of 2016-17. New head coach Travis Green will surely give the trio many duties in what’s to be a “rebuilding” year. And though Horvat led the team in scoring and was named to his first All-Star match in 2017, the folks in NHL 18 didn’t quite give him the greatest of ratings:

For what it’s worth, Boeser had a little fun with his not-so-terrific rating from the crew at EA Sports:

nhl-18-2

Evidently, Boeser just played nine games last season — so a high rating is not warranted. But is 84 fair for Horvat? I’d say so.

I remember today from NHL 2004 and NHL 2005, where guys enjoy Ilya Kovalchuk, Martin Brodeur Joe Sakic, and Nicklas Lidstrom were ranked 98 or 99. Throughout the past decade or so, EA Sports has been a little more realistic with participant evaluations.

EA Sports also unveiled their top-10 defenceman ratings thus far. Drew Doughty and Erik Karlsson are in the cream of this crop, both coming in at evaluations of 91. It only puts things in perspective. Horvat is not quite a celebrity. Doughty and Karlsson are two future Hall of Famers, and they’re just seven things up on Horvat.

So unless you’re a bonafide star and one of the NHL’s elite players, then you’re going to have a tough time getting an evaluation in the high 80s or low-to-mid 90s. Horvat’s rating of 84 is justified, but hey, he can obviously make it much better if he continues to improve his annual totals.
