World of Warcraft is removing 30, 90 and 180 day game time card options
Blizzard is making a change to how you might pay for World of Warcraft–going forward, the only option for Game Time is to buy it for 60 days. The 30, 90, and 180-day Game Time offerings are going away, and only 60 days will remain. The game’s subscription offerings, meanwhile, are staying unchanged (more on that later).
According to the official statement of the developer, the subscription price and WoW tokens will not change and any game time that has already been purchased will be respected for its duration. In the comments of the official forums of the company, the decision was viewed negatively, and many players doubt the reasons why it decided to go this route.
As part of the announcement, Blizzard stated that it has “conducted a review on available services in all currencies” and based on the results, it is removing 30, 90 and 180 day game time card options. Typically, a 60 day game time code for WoW would cost £19.99, but key sites would often sell these for a bit cheaper.
This change affects those who are not avid WoW players, as they are more inclined to take breaks and may not want to invest in an entire 6-month subscription to the game. This change pigeonholes players into subscribing or forces them to drop more money on the 60-day Game Time purchase. This change might work in Blizzard’s favor, getting players to spend longer in the World of Warcraft universe, or it may backfire and finally send players away from the game permanently.
WoW remains wildly popular, more than 15 years after it was released. The franchise grew even bigger in 2020 with the launch of WoW Classic, which has become a massive MMO on its own. That game’s next expansion, The Burning Crusade, is now available for beta testers.
The success of WoW Classic has surprised even Blizzard, which thought the game might only appeal to core fans. Executive producer John Hight told GameSpot: “It certainly surprised us.”
Repeat subscriptions do not change
